About the art: "I watched these Emperor penguins while I was living at a field camp on the frozen Ross Sea in Antarctica. At temperatures averaging 40 below zero (F), I lived with the writer Sara Wheeler in two wooden fish huts set on six feet of sea ice. While on a grant from the National Science Foundation, I spent the Antarctic spring months of August and September painting the landscape as the sun reeled low over the horizon, casting spectacular golden and violet hues on the ice. On one magical evening, I watched the seemingly lifeless landscape come alive as these emperor penguins waddled in from the melting ice edge and stood next to our huts for several hours before ambling off." - Lucia deLeiris
