Summary: Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula are the focus of Joshua Holko’s photographic workshops on this springtime voyage. South Georgia is home to literally millions of fur seals and penguins, wallows of elephant seals, and nesting albatross. The nearby bays are home to king, macaroni and rock hopper penguins. Capture perfect light as the days grow longer, king penguins shuffle eggs on their feet, elephant seals rear their pups and fur seal males battle for mating rights. Toast the graves of Wild and Shackleton and visit Grytviken’s whaling museum. Sail to Elephant Island and the Antarctic Peninsula, with ample time to photograph penguin rookeries during nest-building and breeding, whales and seals, historic sites and the ice sculptures of the White Continent itself before crossing the Drake Passage to Ushuaia.

Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Ushuaia, Argentina
Embark the expedition vessel in Ushuaia in the afternoon. Enjoy a warm welcome before sailing the Beagle Channel.

Day 2: At Sea
At sea, albatross, plunging dolphins and petrels in flight mesmerize as the photography program begins and special briefings prepare you for landings.

Days 3 - 4: Falkland Islands
Discover elephant seals, penguins, sea lions and an astounding array of water-birds. The Zodiacs offer plenty of room to bring your camera gear along. Stanley, the Falklands undeniably British capital, features an excellent war museum, welcoming shops and pubs.

Days 5 - 6: Scotia Sea
Cross the Scotia Sea, entertained and informed by expert naturalists and historians. Review photographs and prepare for capturing the essence of South Georgia's wildlife and landscape.

Days 7 - 11: South Georgia
Spring brings an explosion of life to South Georgia! Enjoy ample time to explore and photograph the island’s spectacular northern coast. Visit wildlife havens that include the world’s largest king penguin rookeries, majestic albatross nests and beaches cluttered with basking elephant seals, feisty fur seals and penguins. Inspired by Shackleton’s epic voyage, we hope to retrace the expedition’s final steps from Fortuna Bay to Stromness.

Days 12 - 13: Scotia Sea
Cross the Scotia Sea, watch seabirds, your first iceberg and mighty whales including blue, fin and sei. Take time to reflect on South Georgia and prepare for the Antarctic Peninsula, the next leg of your adventure.

Day 14: Elephant Island
Conditions permitting, approach Cape Wild, a bleak, rocky spit along Elephant Island’s dramatic north coast. If sea conditions allow, cruise by Zodiac and possibly even step ashore to pay tribute to Shackleton’s 22 men who survived four months here.

Days 15 - 17: South Shetland Islands / Antarctic Peninsula
An attempt to land in the South Shetland Islands will be made before sailing down Gerlache Strait and experiencing Antarctica in its full beauty – a photographer’s paradise! Encounter pack ice and penguin rookeries alive with courtship, mating and nest-building. Visit historic sites and finally step foot on the continent.

Days 18 - 19: Drake Passage
Return to the realm of the albatross – Drake Passage. Celebrate, recap your many experiences and learn how to manage your abundant collection of new photos.

Day 20: Ushuaia, Argentina
Disembark in Ushuahia and make your own way to the airport for your journey home.

Read this itinerary as a guide only; the exact route and program varies according to ice and weather conditions – and the wildlife you encounter. Flexibility is the key to the success of this expedition.

Mandatory Travel Insurance:
All guests are required to have emergency medical evacuation travel insurance coverage. Proof of coverage is required prior to embarkation. The policy provider, policy number and emergency contact phone number must be provided prior to departure date. ExpeditionTrips strongly recommends at least $200,000 Emergency Medical/Evacuation coverage for Antarctic trips which includes coverage for cancellation, trip disruption, baggage and personal property. ExpeditionTrips can assist you with this.

Complimentary Photography Option: Joshua Holko is a full-time professional landscape, nature and wilderness photographer and teacher, who specializes in polar and sub-polar regions. He will be conducting Canon-accredited photography workshops, including informal talks and image reviews, opportunities for one-on-one instruction and informal side-by-side shooting on the deck, Zodiac rides and on shore.

Sea Kayaking Option: $1,295 per person
Traveling in these sturdy, easy-handling, reliable kayaks is an exciting, low impact way to explore the stunning bays and wildlife breeding grounds of Antarctica. If you wish to take this option, please advise us when you make your booking as numbers are limited. Please note, some sea kayaking experience is necessary.
