On November 16, 1928 Australian George Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958) and Ben Eilson took off from Deception in Los Angeles, flying for just 20 minutes before the weather closed in.

A little more than a month later, on December 20, Wilkins and Eilson took off again from Deception, this time they flew for 11 hours across the peninsula and along the eastern side covering  1300 miles (2100km) and reaching a furthest south of 71° 20'S.
