Chippy McNish Polar Medal Campaign

Posted: January 10, 2006

To: United Kingdom Polar Medal Assessment Committee
Henry "Chippy" McNish sailed with Shackleton in the ship Endurance on the 1914 Imperial Trans–Antarctic Expedition. He was an invaluable member of the party, fitting out the boat "James Caird" which set out on an 800 mile journey to get help for the stranded party. The Endurance story is one of the greatest survival stories of all time, yet McNish was denied the Polar Medal by Shackleton for apparently questioning his authority. His story can be read at various locations on the web. In his home town of Port Glasgow, Scotland, it is felt that he thoroughly deserves this honour and so this petition is asking for the Polar Medal to be finally awarded to this brave and independent-minded Scot

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
