Trip
Itinerary
Day 1: Ushuaia
Board the M/V Polar Star to set off an epic voyage.
Days 2-3: Drake Passage
From the Beagle Channel to the Drake Passage, you will progress
south to pass the Antarctic Convergence and move into colder
waters where you will begin to lookout for icebergs. Late on
day 3, plan to land at Aitcho Island in the South Shetland Islands.
Day 4: South Shetland Island
Today you will land at Deception Island and Half Moon Island.
At the volcanic Deception Island there is an opportunity to
indulge in an expedition staff-dug hot pool in the lava sands
and perhaps dash in the frigid Antarctic waters.
Days 5-6: Antarctic Peninsula & Weddell Sea
Late summer in the Antarctic Peninsula is ideal for visiting
the Weddell Sea, an area rich in wildlife and with an abundance
of scientific and historical interest. Plan to land at Brown
Bluff, Devil's Island, Snow Hill Island and Paulet Island, a
circular volcanic island with a large Adelie Penguin rookery.
Days 7-9: At Sea & South Orkney Islands
Your ship turns northeast to steam towards South Georgia. Plan
to make a landing at the South Orkney Islands, weather permitting.
Days 10-13: South Georgia
Snow-capped mountains, tussock grass, active fur seals and crowded
penguin rookeries are some of the breathtaking sights that will
fascinate. The plan is to land at sites such as Royal Bay, Fortuna
Bay, the abandoned Stromness whaling station, Prion Island and
the well known Grytviken.
Days 14-15: At Sea
You head out to sea again on your way to the Falkland Islands
watching for seabirds and marine life when not attending lectures
or simply absorbing the experience.
Days 16-17: Falkland Islands
You make landfall in the Falkland Islands, an isolated archipelago
settled by the British. It is a fantastic collection of wildlife,
scenery, whaling and old sailing ship relics and even an English
style pub. Our first port of call is Stanley, and before leaving
these islands we hope to visit other sites such as West Point
and New Island.
Day 18: At Sea
We head west across the Scotia Sea and then up the Beagle Channel.
Day 19: Ushuaia
Your Antarctic season comes to a spectacular close as you disembark
after breakfast.
