New Web Site Provides One-Click
Info, Products, Community For Antarctic Travelers

With an average temperature of 57 degrees below zero and a half-year stretch of constant sunshine followed by a 6-month-long night, Antarctica is a place of unquestionable extremes. Now a New Hampshire couple has created a web-based community that brings the intrigue of the Frozen Continent to Internet surfers seeking news, information, and products designed to aid travelers heading to the South Pole and to conjure memories for those who've already visited "the ice."

The Antarctic Connection, at www.antarcticconnection.com, is a comprehensive, web-based information center and retail site for all things related to Antarctica. Travelers planning a trip to the ice can find maps, travel guides, and even expedition-class parkas to help ensure a well-planned and warm visit. A broad selection of books, videos, embroidered sportswear, and museum-quality prints is available through the site, which appeals to those who've been to Antarctica, as well as to those who long to visit.

But what sets The Antarctic Connection apart is the virtual community the web site has created, through:
· links to more than a dozen tour operators and outfitters;
· daily weather reports from the South Pole;
· continually updated news reports;
· statistics on weather extremes;
· historical information on Antarctic expeditions over the past three centuries;

The business was launched in August 1998 as the brainchild of Tom and Gloria Hutchings, who have spent a combined 70 months since 1990 living and working at McMurdo, Palmer, and South Pole research stations in Antarctica. They now operate The Antarctic Connection from their home in New Hampshire, where they coined the motto, "Antarctica is closer than you think."

The company's mission is to introduce visitors to the landscape, wildlife, history, and science of the Antarctic in a conscientious and quality manner. "Our goal is to become the best source for Antarctic-related news, weather, and information, and to carry products that are informational and educational as well as fun and entertaining," says The Antarctic Connection's manager and webmaster, Thomas Hutchings.
