On January 1, 2008 the South Pole Geographic Marker was placed in its new location. Since the actual geographic South Pole is found on an ice sheet, it moves approximately 30 feet a year and therefore a new marker has to be placed annually. The design on this shirt is a replica of the 2008 marker.
This year's design was created by a South Pole employee; each notch around the design represents an individual wintering-over at the South Pole. The Antarctic Continent is centered with longitude lines converging over the center where a sign states "90 South".
