On December 1, 1959 the Antarctic Treaty was signed by 12 nations. Those nations recognized that it was in the interest of all mankind that Antarctica should be used solely for peaceful purposes; that significant scientific knowledge could be gleaned from investigation in Antarctica; and that international harmony in these pursuits should be promoted.
