Tradition and sense of place is at the heart of marking the position of the Geographic South Pole and science is the outcome. Each January 1, since 1986, the USGS has installed a marker at the southern-most place on earth. It serves many purposes, including determining the annual movement of the 2 mile-thick ice dome covering the pole. Yet, one can not but wonder if its unique purpose is to bring the scientific community together to celebrate a new year and a truly special place on earth.
On January 1, 2000, Larry Hothem, of the US Geological Survey set the marker at precisely 90 Degrees South. Larry and members of the USGS team, Brad Johnson, Merrin Pearse, Mike Willis, and Robert Glover, used the Geographic Position System technology to determine the position, accurate to 2 centimeters. Their names circumscribe the marker.
