This image of the Endurance by Frank Hurley shows the great ship trapped, uplifted and slowly being crushed in pack ice. Shackleton himself (the boss) is shown assessing the situation from the deck.
The Endurance became firmly wedged in ice while on its way to Antarctica in 1915. Drifting in the ice pack for 6 months she eventually sank. What followed was one of the great survival stories of Antarctic exploration. Shackleton then with a few of his men rowed an epic 800 miles in an open boat in the icy Antarctic waters to South Georgia to get help. Not one man was lost.
Classic Image Photographs publishes this dramatic series of historic Antarctic Posters. These superb images have never been published in this format before.
