WHEN ONE THINKS
of Antarctic wildlife, PENGUINS are often the first animals that come to mind.
Indeed these graceful, yet comical; hardy yet elegant creatures are considered by many to be the signature species of the polar south.
But there are so many more visitors and residents.

NOT WHAT YOU THINK...
The largest "purely terrestrial animal" in Antarctica is actually a flightless midge, the Belgica Antarctica, which grows to just 6 mm (0.2 in) in size. This endemic creature is also the continent's only true insect.
